The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired 23-year old righty swinging catcher Tim Federowicz, 22-year old righty reliever Juan Rodriguez and 24-year old righty starting pitcher from the Red Sox and for those three guys, the Dodgers sent 23-year old switch-hitting CF Trayvon Robinson. The Mariners wanted Robinson to close this deal with the Red Sox, in which Boston acquired lefty starting pitcher Erik Bedard and righty reliever Josh Fields. The Red Sox also kicked in outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang to the Mariners.

Time to focus on what the Dodgers got for Robinson. Tim Federowicz came into this season as the Red Sox’ #21 ranked prospect according to Baseball America. He has played in 89 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 92 for 335 (.275 avg, .734 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 7 homers, 50 RBIs and 1 stolen bases. Federowicz has now played in 340 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 352 for 1,282 (.275 avg, .743 OPS) with 157 runs scored, 26 homers, 184 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. The Dodgers think he can be their starting catcher as early as next season. 22-year old righty reliever Juan Rodriguez has pitched in 32 games (0 starts) in A-ball so far this year and he is 2-4 with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Rodriguez has whiffed 88 batters in his first 59 innings so far this year which is pretty impressive. Rodriguez has now pitched in 75 games (21 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 12-7 with 3 saves, a 3.31 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Rodriguez has only allowed 149 hits while whiffing 242 batters in his first 201 innings in the minors, so his stuff is not to be questioned, but he has also walked 102 batters and that’s way too many. Stephen Fife has pitched in 19 games (18 starts) in AA-ball so far this year and he is 11-4 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He has now pitched in 77 games (62 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 23-16 with 2 saves, a 3.94 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.

Trayvon Robinson came into this season as the Dodgers’ #10 prospect and he’s having a monster season in AAA. He has played in 100 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 108 for 368 (.293 avg, .938 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 26 homers, 71 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Robinson was blocked in CF by Matt Kemp on the Dodgers.

The Dodgers felt that three prospects is better than one. Only time will tell if they were right or not, because Robinson is going to be starting in Seattle at some point in the near future.

The Dodgers have sent 33-year old switch-hitting shortstop Rafael Furcal and $2.5 million bucks to the Cardinals for 24-year old righty swinging outfielder Alex Castellanos. Castellanos was not one of the Cardinals’ top prospects but he’s turning in a very impressive year in the minors so far in 2011. He has played in 93 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 113 for 354 (.319 avg, .941 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 19 homers, 62 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Castellanos has now played in 384 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 392 for 1,384 (.283 avg, .827 OPS) with 238 runs scored, 45 homers, 191 RBIs and 70 stolen bases.

Rafael Furcal played in only 37 games for the Dodgers so far this year and he is 27 for 137 (.197 avg, .520 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 12 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He played in 617 games in his six years with the Dodgers and he was 711 for 2,511 (.283 avg, .757 OPS) with 407 runs scored, 44 homers, 228 RBIs and 109 stolen bases. Furcal just couldn’t stay healthy this year.

This was a good deal for the Dodgers because it saved them $1.5 million bucks the rest of the year while acquiring an interesting prospect.

The Dodgers have placed 32-year old righty swinging 3B Juan Uribe on the 15-day disalbed list due to a lower abdominal strain. Uribe has played in 77 games for the Dodgers so far this year and he is 55 for 270 (.204 avg, .557 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 4 homers, 28 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Lucky for the Dodgers, Casey Blake came off the D.L. today too and he will take over at the hot corner for now.

The Los Angeles Dodgers place Kenley Jansen on the D.L.

The Dodgers have placed 23-year old righty reliever Kenley Jansen on the 15-day disabled list due to cardiac arrhythmia. Jansen has pitched in 34 games (0 starts) for the Dodgers so far this year and he is 1-1 with 2 saves, a 3.65 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Jansen has struck out 61 batters while only allowing 23 hits in his first 37 innings pitched this year as he has outstanding stuff. The Dodgers are going to take it easy with Jansen as a heart condition is nothing to mess with.

Carlos Monasterios of the Los Angeles Dodgers will miss the rest of the 2011 season

The Dodgers will be without 25-year old righty reliever/starter Carlos Monasterios for the rest of the 2011 season and a huge chunk of the 2012 season as he underwent Tommy John Surgery on July 15th. Monasterios pitched in only 1 game (1 start) in AAA-ball this year and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 3.25 WHIP. Monasterios pitched in 32 games (13 starts) as a rookie for the Dodgers last year and he was 3-5 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. The Dodgers kept him on the roster the whole 2010 season as he was a Rule 5 Draft Pick. They like Monasterios but they will have to wait a while to see him on the pitching mound again.
