The Los Angeles Dodgers are part of a three team deal with the Mariners and Red Sox
The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired 23-year old righty swinging catcher Tim Federowicz, 22-year old righty reliever Juan Rodriguez and 24-year old righty starting pitcher from the Red Sox and for those three guys, the Dodgers sent 23-year old switch-hitting CF Trayvon Robinson. The Mariners wanted Robinson to close this deal with the Red Sox, in which Boston acquired lefty starting pitcher Erik Bedard and righty reliever Josh Fields. The Red Sox also kicked in outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang to the Mariners.
Time to focus on what the Dodgers got for Robinson. Tim Federowicz came into this season as the Red Sox’ #21 ranked prospect according to Baseball America. He has played in 89 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 92 for 335 (.275 avg, .734 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 7 homers, 50 RBIs and 1 stolen bases. Federowicz has now played in 340 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 352 for 1,282 (.275 avg, .743 OPS) with 157 runs scored, 26 homers, 184 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. The Dodgers think he can be their starting catcher as early as next season. 22-year old righty reliever Juan Rodriguez has pitched in 32 games (0 starts) in A-ball so far this year and he is 2-4 with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Rodriguez has whiffed 88 batters in his first 59 innings so far this year which is pretty impressive. Rodriguez has now pitched in 75 games (21 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 12-7 with 3 saves, a 3.31 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Rodriguez has only allowed 149 hits while whiffing 242 batters in his first 201 innings in the minors, so his stuff is not to be questioned, but he has also walked 102 batters and that’s way too many. Stephen Fife has pitched in 19 games (18 starts) in AA-ball so far this year and he is 11-4 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He has now pitched in 77 games (62 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 23-16 with 2 saves, a 3.94 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.
Trayvon Robinson came into this season as the Dodgers’ #10 prospect and he’s having a monster season in AAA. He has played in 100 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 108 for 368 (.293 avg, .938 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 26 homers, 71 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Robinson was blocked in CF by Matt Kemp on the Dodgers.
The Dodgers felt that three prospects is better than one. Only time will tell if they were right or not, because Robinson is going to be starting in Seattle at some point in the near future.
