The Dodgers DFA Nick Green

The Dodgers have designated 31-year old righty swinging infielder Nick Green. Green played in 5 games for the Dodgers this season and he was 1 for 8 (.125 avg, .347 OPS) with 1 run scored. The Dodgers will likely release Green if he clears waivers as they are loaded in the organization with depth in the middle infield. He will likely hook on with another team but the Dodgers won’t miss him one bit.

The Los Angles Dodgers DFA Ramon Ortiz

The Dodgers have designated 37-year old righty reliever/starter Ramon Ortiz for assignment. Ortiz pitched in 16 games (2 starts) for the Dodgers this season and he was 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. This could very well be the end of his major league career. The Dodgers have recalled 32-year old righty reliever Justin Miller to replace Ortiz in the bullpen. Miller has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 0-1 with a 2.22 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. He pitched in 44 games (0 starts) for the Giants last year and he was 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. This was a good move for the Dodgers as Miller has been an effective major league reliever the last couple of years.

The Los Angeles Dodgers might be in the hunt for a backup catcher

The Dodgers don’t seem to have much faith in A.J. Ellis. With that in mind they might be looking for a new backup catcher. Veteran hands like Mike Redmond, Dioner Navarro, Gerald Laird and Humberto Quintero are all likely available. But they could look to try to get a younger catcher to groom in guys like Landon Powell, Bobby Wilson, Taylor Teagarden or J.R. Towles. I’m thinking that the Dodgers can get any of these guys for cash or a C-type prospect.

The Los Angeles Dodgers place George Sherrill on the D.L.

The Dodgers have placed 33-year old lefty reliever George Sherrill on the 15-day disabled list with back tightness. Sherrill has pitched in 22 games (0 starts) this season for the Dodgers and he is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP. He has given up 18 hits and walked 15 batters in only 14 2/3 innings this season for the Dodgers as he has been getting lit up. The Dodgers have activated starting shortstop Rafael Furcal from the D.L. to replace Sherrill on the active roster. Furcal has played in 19 games this season for the Dodgers and he is 25 of 81 (.309 avg, .798 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 6 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Dodgers will be glad to get Furcal back for the top of the lineup.

The Los Angeles Dodgers ink Jon Huber

The Dodgers have signed 28-year old righty reliever Jon Huber to a minor league deal. Huber has pitched in 4 games (0 starts) in AA-ball this year and he is 0-0 with 1 save, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2007 with the Mariners. Huber has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. I like this pickup for the Dodgers as Huber has a track record of success in the majors albeit a short one.
