The Dodgers have designated righty reliever Tanyon Sturtze for assignment to make room on the roster so that they can activate reliever Cory Wade off of the D.L. Sturtze pitched well in 3 games for the Dodgers this season as he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. But, the Dodgers will be much better with Wade coming out of the bullpen than Sturtze so this was a move that needed made.

The Dodgers have designated infielder Pablo Ozuna for assignment. Ozuna appeared in 28 games for the Dodgers this season and he was only 3 for 18 (.167 avg, .445 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base. The Dodgers have recalled rookie 3B Blake DeWitt from AAA to replace Ozuna on the bench. DeWitt played in 88 games earlier this season for the Dodgers and he was 72 for 280 (.257 avg, .688 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 5 homers, 35 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired 42-year old righty starting pitcher Greg Maddux from the Padres for a player to be named later. This was a good move for the Dodgers with Brad Penny likely going down for the season to injury. Maddux has started 26 games for the Padres this season and he is 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Maddux should have more wins than he does this season but the Padres just didn’t score enough for him which shouldn’t be a problem in L.A. Maddux has now pitched in 737 games (733 starts) in his major league career and he is 353-223 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. It’s never a bad thing to acquire a Hall of Famer for the stretch run and that’s exactly what the Dodgers have done.

The Dodgers have placed righty reliever Cory Wade on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Wade has pitched in 40 games (0 starts) for the Dodgers this season and he is 2-1 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. The Dodgers will miss Wade who has been outstanding out of the bullpen this season for them. The Dodgers have recalled 37-year old righty Tanyon Sturtze to replace Wade in the bullpen. Sturtze is a old Joe Torre favorite as he pitched three years for him in New York. Sturtze has pitched in 39 games (1 start) in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 2-2 with 5 saves, a 4.38 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Sturtze has a lot of major league experience but a lot of it is not too good. He has pitched in 269 games (84 starts) in his major league career and he is 40-44 with 3 saves, a 5.21 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. The Dodgers hope Wade makes a quick recovery.

The Dodgers have placed righty starting pitcher Brad Penny on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Penny has started 17 games for the Dodgers this season and he is 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. The Dodgers have recalled lefty starting pitcher Eric Stults to replace Penny in the rotation. He pitched well earlier this season for the Dodgers as he was 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. It’s possible that Penny will get shut down for the season as he didn’t last long on his last stint with the Dodgers.
